Profile America -- Sunday, October 10th. The spotlight this weekend in many parts of the country is on apples -- and all the delicious things that can be made from them. The Vermont Apple Festival is under way in Springfield, while over in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, the annual Apple Butter Festival features copper kettles of the dark brown treat simmering in the town square. Similar celebrations in Kansas, Ohio, Georgia, and Pennsylvania will highlight the long-running love affair Americans have for apples. All will feature entertainment, crafts, games, and good food. Each year, American farmers produce nearly 5 million tons of apples -- which works out to about 16½ pounds for each of us.
