Telemundo Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month in a Big Way
MIAMI - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Telemundo celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 thorough
October 15, commemorating the values, traditions and contributions of
the Hispanic community in the United States. The network will air a
series of programs and special reports as well as a new public service
campaign and educational initiative directed at U.S. Hispanics.
Telemundo announced a strategic partnership with the Congressional
Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) to launch a month-long campaign
celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month under the theme "Celebrating
History, Heritage and the American Dream." The multiplatform campaign
includes PSAs highlighting Hispanic history and culture and showcases
successful Hispanics that serve as an example and inspiration for the
American Dream, such as Roberto Clemente, Jaime Escalante, Rita Moreno,
Selena, Antonia Novello, Cesar Chávez and Dolores Huerta, Carlos
Santana, Tito Puente and Ritchie Valens. Under CHCI's mission to develop
the new generation of Latino leaders, the campaign will feature Hispanic
top talent such as Wilmer Valderrama, Arturo Sandoval, Pee Wee, as well
as Telemundo personalities such as Jose DÃaz-Balart, MarÃa Celeste
Arrarás, Carmen Dominicci, Vanessa Hauc, Jencarlos Canela and Jorge Luis
Pila.
El Grito and the Bicentennial
The big celebration kicked off September 13 through September 19 with
the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Independence and the
Centennial of the Mexican Revolution. Telemundo's morning show "Levántate"
and news show "Al Rojo Vivo con MarÃa Celeste" travel to
Mexico to present all the elements of this stunning Aztec celebration.
The network will broadcast the specials "Mexico Vive" with Mónica
Noguera and Karim Mendiburu, airing "El Grito de Independencia" live on
September 15, beginning at 12:00am ET /9:00pm PT from the Zócalo in
Mexico City, and "¡Viva Mexico! El Bicentenario," a special that
highlights the best in Mexican music, hosted by Jenni Rivera and Omar
Germenos which will air Sunday, September 19 at 7PM/6c.
During that week, the network's sports programming will also join the
celebration. On Thursday, September 16 at 11:35 PM/10:35c, "Titulares
y Más" will celebrate the Bicentennial with a special show featuring
special guests, mariachi music and much more. In addition, "Boxeo
Telemundo" will present a special show from Mexico City that will
air September 17 at 11:35pm East/Pacific and will include the fight for
the Mini-Lightweight Latino title of the World Boxing Council (Armando
Torres vs. Omar "Metralla" Rosales). Those in attendance include the
president of the Council, Jose Sulaiman and important legendary figures
of Mexican boxing.
Telemundo and the NFL
Continuing the celebration of our Hispanic Heritage, Telemundo will
offer viewers the best of American football in Spanish with the highly
anticipated encounter between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins
on "Sunday Night Football." The game, hosted by Jessi Losada,
Rene Giraldo and Edgar López will air on Sunday, September 26 at
8:00pm East/Pacific on Telemundo stations in New York, Miami, Los
Ãngeles, Chicago and Dallas. In addition to the excitement of the game
itself, viewers will also enjoy a unique show that will include
performances by Marc Anthony, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie and Enrique
Iglesias and an appearance by Gloria Estefan.
El Poder de Saber and Education Nation
Telemundo's educational platform El Poder de Saber joins forces with NBC
News during Hispanic Heritage month in Education Nation, a landmark,
multi-platform event to encourage a national dialogue over the future of
education in the United States. Education Nation, from September 26 to
October 2, will be celebrated in tandem with the National Education
Conference, an interactive, two-day event that will take place at the
Rockefeller Center in New York City.
On Sunday, September 26, Telemundo's public affairs show "Enfoque" will
air a special to discuss this very important topic for Hispanics,
featuring special guests and experts on the subject. During the entire
week "Levántate" will include daily segments with experts and
live reports from New York City. "Al Rojo Vivo Con MarÃa Celeste"
will offer special reports on the subject and in an innovative approach
will have student reporters from around the nation filing stories on
education with their unique student perspective. "Noticiero Telemundo"
will air live from Rockefeller Center to offer viewers all information
and details on this unprecedented initiative including the special
series "El Poder de Saber" with Vanessa Hauc with important stories on
education. On Thursday, September 30 at 11:35PM /10:35c "Titulares y
Más" will discuss education with special segments with Edgar López
from Rockefeller Center.
Meanwhile, Telemundo.com will launch a special section on Education
Nation that will include relevant reports and all details on the event,
as well as other details of great interest for Hispanics, including
information on the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and El Poder de Saber.
Youth cable network mun2 will also join the celebration. September 19 -
25, the show "The Shuffle," airing at 6pm ET/PT Tuesdays and
Thursdays, will feature stories related to education and its importance
to Hispanics. In addition, on Friday, September 17 at 7pm ET/PT (with a
rebroadcast at 9pm ET/PT), mun2 will air the film "Stand and
Deliver," based on the life of the famous Bolivian educator Jaime
Escalante and how he defied the educational system to help a group of
students from East Los Angeles achieve the highest academic levels. A
series of spots showcasing students, Hispanic activists and education
will also make up part of the channel's programming during the week. The
Web site holamun2.com will also join this initiative by airing short
videos about the subject.
At a local level, Telemundo stations will support Education Nation by
presenting experts on the subject and special reports on the importance
of education in their respective markets, as well as Internet chats with
experts during the 6:00 pm news.
