"2010 Taiwan Cycling Festival" Kick-off Press Conference
TAIPEI, Taiwan - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Taiwan's Tourism Bureau is cooperating with the governments of Hualien
and Taitung counties to launch a series of cycling activities called
"Taiwan Cycling Festival" . This is the first time for the Bureau to
organize such an event, which will be held from 16-24 Oct, 2010. The
Ministry of Transportation and Communications held the kick-off press
conference on 10 September. Ms. Janice Seh-Jen Lai, the director general
of Taiwan's Tourism Bureau, said that the Taiwan cycling festival is a
new theme activity of the Tour Taiwan series which is beneficial to
promoting Taiwan's travel industry.
In recent years, being eco-friendly and fostering sustainable
development have become hot topics around the world. Partly because of
this, cycling has become not only a popular leisure activity, but a
preferred form of transportation by many people. Known as the "Kingdom
of Bicycles," Taiwan has promoted bicycle riding. Riding the bicycle has
become an important part of life and travel for people here. Also,
cycling tourism has become a unique theme attraction for Taiwan tourism.
The "2010 Taiwan Cycling Festival" includes a series of activities that
combine cycling competition activities with cycling tourism. These
include inviting world renowned cycling teams to participate in the
"International Route" (Taiwan Cup 2010) competition here. We are also
inviting cyclists in Taiwan and around the world to compete in the 160
km, 120 km and 50 km "Professionals Race" . Other races include the 100
km, 200 km and 400 km "Challenging Yourself" competitions, and the 51 km
and 123 km "Iron Man" competitions.
Nineteen teams from 10 countries have signed up to participate in the
International Highways race. They include Rabobank Pro Team, the third
place winner of the 2010 Tour de France groups race. Top international
teams will compete together in the Hualien-Taitung area, with the event
expected to spark a celebrity spotting fever. This competition will be
called "Taiwan Cup."
To welcome tourists to the Hualien-Taitung area to participate in the
cycling festival or to watch the races, the Taitung and Hualien county
governments, the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area Administration
and the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration have planned a
series of activities from 16-24 October to allow visitors to enjoy the
culture, folk music, cuisine, hot springs and other attractions of the
area. These activities will be packaged into tourism itineraries with
preferential prices, to enable more people to experience the beauty of
Taiwan's Hualien and Taitung area through the bicycle festival as much
as they can at a low cost. We believe this will provide tourists with a
rich travel experience and will also help invigorate the area's tourism
sector.
