SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Brampton

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle fatality of a man in Brampton on September 3, 2010. The Peel Regional Police (PRP) reported the following information to the SIU:

--  At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Friday, September 3, PRP officers were
    investgating a collision south of Fisherman Drive on Hurontario Street;
--  A PRP crusier was stopped on Hurontario Street blocking traffic;
--  A southbound motorcycle struck a stopped police cruiser on Hurontario
    Street at Fisherman Drive; and
--  The rider of the motorcycle was injured and he was transported to
    Sunnybrook Hospital, where he later died.

Four investigators and three forensic investigators are investigating this incident. Anyone who may have information regarding this case is asked to contact the Unit at 416-622-1925 or 1-800-787-8529 Extension 1925.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

--  consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in
    connection with the incident under investigation
--  depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if
    appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
--  report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
