September is National Preparedness Month! Get Red Dirt Ready for Emergencies in Three Simple Steps

OKLAHOMA CITY - (BUSINESS WIRE) - September marks National Preparedness Month in Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security (OKOHS) encourages families and children to get Red Dirt Ready in three simple steps: (1) Get a Kit (2) Make a Plan and (3) Be Informed.

OKOHS emphasizes that any crisis can be a potential emergency-from taking cover during a tornado, your car breaking down during extreme temperatures or a man-made disaster.

"National Preparedness Month reminds us to be ready for the unexpected-to get prepared before the storm hits," said Kerry Pettingill, Oklahoma Homeland Security Director. "We hope Oklahomans take the time this September to gather a few items that can be helpful during a crisis. That's what being Red Dirt Ready means, being personally prepared."

To get prepared for emergencies, OKOHS suggests the following easy steps:

#1.

Get a Kit of emergency supplies.

Have at least three days worth of emergency supplies for each family member including non-perishable food and water.
#2.

Make a Plan on how you and your family will respond to an emergency.

Before an emergency happens, sit down together and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency. Keep a copy of this plan in your emergency supply kit or another safe place where you can access it in the event of a disaster.
#3.

Be Informed about emergencies common to your area.

Learn more about the potential emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate way to respond to them.

During National Preparedness Month OKOHS will be providing opportunities for the public to win emergency supply kits and a Smart Safe Tornado Shelter. OKOHS will also participate in the 14th Annual Septemberfest on Sept. 11 at the Governor's Mansion, 820 NE 23rd Street, in Oklahoma City. For more information, visit RedDirtReady.com.

National Preparedness Month is coordinated in Oklahoma by OKOHS with support and assistance from a strong coalition of state agencies, volunteer organizations and private sector partners including:

  • Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM)
  • Oklahoma Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives
  • Oklahoma Citizen Corps
  • Ready Oklahoma
