THE HILL: 50 Wealthiest Members of Congress
Sen. John Kerry Tops the List for Second Year in a Row
The Hill newspaper today released its annual list identifying the 50 wealthiest members of Congress. The lawmakers were worth almost $1.4 billion in 2009, about $83.4 million more than in 2008.
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) grabbed the number one spot for the second consecutive year, with a minimum net worth of $188.6 million at the end of last year, up by more than $20 million from 2008, according to his financial disclosure form.
At number two is Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Even though he saw his wealth decline by more than $4 million in 2009, Issa still reported a net worth of $160.1 million. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), ranks third, with her net worth leaping to $152.3 million, a more than $40 million jump from a year ago.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) is the fifth wealthiest lawmaker under The Hill's formula and the only newcomer to the top ten. He replaced Rep. Harry Teague (D-N.M.), who fell off the top 50 after the value of a company he has a stake in - Teaco Energy Services, Inc. - declined in value from $39.6 million in 2008 to at least $1 million in 2009.
Twenty-seven Democrats along with 23 Republicans make up the 50 richest in Congress. Thirty House members and 20 senators are on the list.
The Hill based its analysis on annual financial disclosure forms that lawmakers are required to complete and file with the House clerk or Senate secretary. The disclosures are for lawmakers' assets and liabilities as of the end of 2009.
