Lieutenant Governor Maldonado Files Formal Intervention In Lawsuit Aimed At Derailing Open Primary System
Today, Lt. Governor Maldonado filed a formal intervention to oppose the lawsuit aimed at halting the implementation of voter-approved proposition 14.
"I could not stand by and watch the transparent effort to undermine the voters' right to an open primary system. Voters were crystal clear that they wanted to change business as usual in Sacramento and the effort to derail proposition 14 is not only without merit, it's more of the same political game-playing that has gridlocked the Capitol for years," said Maldonado.
"I've filed a formal intervention to protect and uphold the will of the voters. My job is to represent and safeguard the will of the people - and I will fight to ensure their votes are counted and respected."
Lt Governor Maldonado authored SB6 and obtained a two-thirds majority vote of the legislature to put Proposition 14 on the June 8 ballot. The measure ensured equal access to the same ballot for all starting with the 2012 elections by eliminating closed party primaries and allowing for one primary ballot. The top two vote getters go onto the November elections. The measure overwhelmingly passed and is now being challenged by political insiders who strive to maintain a dysfunctional status quo.
