Iran's President Escapes Apparent Assassination Attempt
By Ian Brockwell
The President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, appears to have been the subject of an assassination attempt, although the country's official news agency IRNA said the blast was from a firecracker set off by an "excited fan".
It is most unlikely that someone would be foolish enough to let off a "firecracker" so close to the President, knowing the risks involved in doing so.
According to reports, a grenade (or homemade bomb) was thrown at President Ahmadinejad's convoy as he was heading to speak with a crowd.
A number of people were reportedly injured and it is believed a man was arrested.
President Ahmadinejad's vehicle was about 100 yards away from the explosion and was not hurt in the incident.
There are of course a number of people (and countries) who would like to see him go (in any way possible), and those at the top of the list would be Israel, the United States and Britain. However, there are of course some Iranians who might feel that it is time for a change of regime, and we can only guess as to whether these receive backing from the west.
President Ahmadinejad is well known for speaking his mind, although this in itself is not a crime. However, there are some who would like to outlaw such thoughts, and in some countries they have succeeded.
Whilst there is absolutely no proof (yet) that Iran is trying to develop a nuclear weapon, certain governments (supported by the media) would like us to believe that they are. The United States, supported mainly by Britain and Israel, seek to impose increasingly demanding sanctions on Iran (just as they did against Iraq), in the hope of forcing Ahmadinejad to allow probing inspections within his country.

Such inspections would be more acceptable if other countries were subjected to the same scrutiny. I am of course referring to Israel, who already has nuclear weapons, yet refuse to publicly admit this, or allow anyone to inspect them.
It seems unfair that Iran should receive sanctions for allegedly "thinking" about creating nuclear weapons, when Israel receive no penalties at all for actually having them. In fact, Israel seems to be rewarded for their deception, by receiving substantial financial help from the United States.
Perhaps the west would have more success with President Ahmadinejad if they were to treat him in the same way they do others?
Sadly, the talk of nuclear weapons is not the only reason why Ahmadinejad and Iran has become a target. Many oil companies were making good profits from Iran in the past (under different leadership), and they would dearly love to resurrect this lucrative deal. This of course is not likely while Ahmadinejad remains as President, hence the strong interest in his future.
