US Soldiers to be Honored in Ceremony for Acts of Selflessness
Soldiers Honored for Selfless Acts to Local Community and Military Service Overseas
First Army Division East, the 205th Infantry Training Support Brigade, and Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center leaders will honor Soldiers during a ceremony here tomorrow.
Col. Timothy Newsome, 205th Infantry Training Support Brigade commander, and Col. Craig Bargfrede, 734th Agri-Business Development Team commander, will hold an awards ceremony Friday at 9 a.m. on the Camp Atterbury Parade Field to honor two 205th Infantry TSB Soldiers and five Iowa National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 734th Agri-Business Development Team for their selfless acts displayed while off duty. Additionally the leadership will honor another Soldier who will receive the Bronze Star Medal for his actions during deployment overseas.
During the ceremony, Sgt. 1st Class Richard C. Storer will be awarded his second Bronze Star Medal and will receive his first oak leaf cluster. Storer meritoriously distinguished himself from May 2, 2009, through March 31, 2010, during Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as the non-commissioned officer-in-charge of the counter-improvised explosive device team under the command of the Combined Joint Task Force Paladin on a forward operating base in Ramrod, Afghanistan.
The awards ceremony also is recognizing U.S. military service members who, on two separate occasions, went above and beyond the call of duty to assist local Indiana residents in emergency situations involving vehicle accidents.
The first instance occurred in the early morning hours on July 19 when two Soldiers with the 3-338th Training Support Battalion, 205th Infantry TSB, were traveling to Camp Atterbury and encountered a multi-vehicle accident. The Soldiers immediately assisted by extracting injured civilians through the window of a severely damaged and burning vehicle. Both Soldiers rendered first aid, in addition to extinguishing the fire.
The second incident occurred just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Travis Williams was struck by a motor vehicle near 16th Street and Rochester Avenue on Indianapolis' west side. The Iowa National Guard Soldiers, who were witnesses to the accident, immediately rendered assistance by administering first aid to the injured officer and provided traffic and crowd control surrounding the incident. The efforts of these Soldiers allowed for emergency responders to quickly assess the patient and ensured the safe transport of the injured officer to a local hospital.
The 205th Infantry Training Support Brigade Soldiers receiving awards during the ceremony include Sgt. 1st Class Richard Storer of St. Marys, Ohio; Staff Sgt. Justin. C. Harris of Dayton, Ohio and Staff Sgt. Jeffrey D. Anderson of Muncie, Ind. The Iowa Army National Guard Soldiers receiving awards are Spc. Daniel L. Kersbergen of Boyden, Iowa; Spc. Martin X. Rustvoldt of Audubon, Iowa; Staff Sgt. Eric E. Pugh of Winterset, Iowa; Sgt. Forrest C. Shady of Jefferson, Iowa; and Spc. Nathaniel H. Wunsch of Des Moines, Iowa.
