Borders Books, Northridge Has Teamed Up to Help Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) Close the Gap on November Goal of Collecting 100,000 Books

Los Angeles, CA, July 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Launched last November, CCRC's What a Difference a BOOK Makes campaign has a simple mission- ensure every child in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valley has access to age-appropriate books. Borders has stepped in for the not-so-simple part of helping CCRC collect 38,000 more books by November 29 to reach their goal of 100,000 books. Borders is rolling out a book drive exclusively at their Northridge Fashion Center location which neighbors the CCRC headquarters. Now through August 30, store associates will encourage customers to donate books including titles from the Junie B. Jones, Magic Treehouse and Ramona and Beezus series, as well as a number of picture books for very young readers.

“CCRC is very excited about this partnership,” says CEO and President, Dr. Michael Olenick. “We take great pride in our history of providing quality services and programs that strengthen the communities we serve and Borders has a long-standing history of giving back to the communities it serves. I'm grateful to Borders Northridge and the generosity of their customers.”

In middle income neighborhoods the ratio of age appropriate books is 13 books per 1 child. Compare that to low income neighborhoods where the ratio drops to 1 book per 300 children. CCRC launched the initiative in response to the alarming statistics severely hindering the quality of life for millions of people and costing well over 100 billion dollars a year in the US alone.
Books are essential to a child's social, emotional and intellectual growth necessary for lifelong learning. The most critical time in a child's learning experience is kindergarten to third grade. If a child falls behind here, they are not likely to recover. Children who fail to meet reading and math proficiency standards by the end of third grade are much more likely to drop out of school later.
