Former Sniper Discusses Timely Issue of Combat Post-Traumatic Stress Government
Scout Sniper says returning war vets PTSD treatments will be more costly if we don't act now
Jay Taylor, unfortunately, knows all about post traumatic stress disorder, a growing problem among soldiers returning from Afghanistan or Iraq.
Taylor joined the Marine Corp on his 18th birthday, and qualified for training as a Scout Sniper after completion of boot camp and basic training. He excelled as a sniper and was shipped to Vietnam for a two-year tour of duty. While serving, Taylor was awarded the Bronze Star and the Navy Achievement Medals, and from all indications, life was good--until he arrived home.
Shorty after he returned home, Taylor was emotionally overwhelmed by the waves of memories from his gruesome and violent war experience, which haunted him as he tried to transition from combat to civilian life.
"Contrary to popular belief, not all snipers are stone cold killers," said Taylor. "But it was our job to be effective killers and to keep our emotions in check-which can create PTSD problems in civilian life. Can you imagine how many soldiers will need help after we withdraw from Iraq?" adds Taylor.
Point of Aim, Point of Impact, by Jay Taylor, is a personal story of his attempts to deal the post-traumatic stress disorder that confronted him in his everyday life after war.
In an enlightening and informative interview, Taylor will discuss:
- Understanding the emotional and economical reality of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for returning war vets
- Why providing proper treatment and care for returning vets now will save money in the future
- Why public support for returning vets is so important to their mental health
- The consequences of being a trained killer and losing friends in war
- The difficult and traumatic transition from military combat to civilian life
