Ghana devastated as Gyan misses last gasp chance to win against Uruguay

After watching Holland beat Brazil in a thriller earlier today we had the delight of a hard-fought crunching game between Ghana and Uruguay to decide who would meet Holland in the Semi Finals.

Muntari put Ghana ahead before the halftime whistle as the hopes of Africa increased for the only remaining African side in the first African World Cup. Forlan dented those hopes though with an equalizer ten minutes after the break.

Neither side really pushed for a winner and the game had very little excitement. The first ninety minutes ended 1-1 and these two went into Extra Time. With just a few seconds of added time left and with a penalty shootout on the cards, Ghana had a chance cleared off the line by the hands of Uruguay striker Suarez.

Suarez saw red for the goal saving save and Ghana were gifted a penalty. Gyan stepped up with a chance to win the game from the spot but his shot blasted off the crossbar and moments later the whistle went and the two teams were forced to face a shootout.

An admirable Gyan stepped up to the spot to try again for Ghana in the shootout and this time he converted brilliantly. Forlan and Victorino also scored for Uruguay whilst Appiah converted for Ghana to make it 2-2. Scotti put Uruguay in the lead with a poorly struck shot before the next three penalties were saved. Abreu then stepped up and chipped in a cool penalty to give Uruguay a 4-2 win and send them into the Semi Final.

A great game in the end and a heartbreaking one for Ghana. Gyan will be devastated at missing the chance while Suarez will be delighted that his red card helped to save his team, although he will miss the game against Holland.
