Magnetek Expects Improved Pension Outlook with Passage of Pension Funding Relief
MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Magnetek, Inc. ("Magnetek" or the "Company" ) (NYSE:MAG), a leading
provider of digital power and motion control systems, commented today on
the recent passage of the Preservation of Access to Care for Medicare
Beneficiaries and Pension Relief Act of 2010. The law provides, among
other things, pension relief for employers with defined benefit pension
plans. As previously disclosed, Magnetek has an underfunded defined
benefit pension plan that was frozen in 2003.
The legislation allows companies with a defined benefit pension plan to
choose between two alternative funding schedules: amortizing funding
shortfalls over 15 years for any two plan years between 2008 and 2011,
or paying interest on a funding shortfall for only two plan years of the
employer's choosing after which seven-year amortization would apply.
According to Marty Schwenner, Magnetek's chief financial officer,
Magnetek has been engaged in efforts to have pension reform addressed by
Congress. "We are very pleased with this development in pension relief,"
stated Mr. Schwenner. "We expect either funding relief option would
provide us with improved near term cash flow due to expected lower
pension contributions, however the legislation will not improve total
cash flow. We are working with our actuaries to quantify the magnitude
of the short term impact on our Company."
Updated pension funding obligations are expected to be reported in the
Company's upcoming Form 10-K annual report.
