Hawaii Spotlights Exemplary Solar Initiative at IEEE PV Specialists Conference

HONOLULU - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The Organizing Committee of the 35th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference, the longest running global gathering of PV scientists and engineers, today announced the speaker lineup for the June 20-25 event at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The solar industry's top researchers and professionals will convene to present PV's latest research and advances while also exploring key industry issues.

On Tuesday, June 22 at 1:30 PM, Hawaii officials and representatives of key stakeholder perspectives will hold a panel discussion about the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) and how to address the current barriers to high penetration of PV on the islands. Hear from:

  • Moderator: Theodore Peck, HI Dept. of Business, Economic Development & Tourism
  • Legislative Perspective: Hon. Hermina Morita, State Representative, HI Legislature, Chair of the Energy and Environmental Protection Committee
  • Regulatory Perspective: Hon. Carlito Caliboso, Chairman, HI Public Utilities Commission
  • Utility Perspective: Scott Seu, Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc.
  • PV Industry Perspective: Mark Duda, Distributed Energy Partners

"Hawaii provides the ideal backdrop for a gathering of photovoltaics experts as our state pushes forward on our path to create 70 percent clean energy by 2030 through the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative," said Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr. "Hawaii welcomes PV's top minds to our state and is pleased to set the stage for breakthrough photovoltaic research discussions and presentations."

This year's PV Specialists Conference will feature an in-depth technical program with a record 930 presentations to take place following plenary talks each morning from all 10 technical areas. Speakers include:

  • James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr., Hawaii Lieutenant Governor
  • James Edmonds, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Joint Global Change Research Institute at the University of Maryland
  • Rhone Resch, President of SEIA (Solar Energy Industries Association)
  • John Lushetsky, Manager of the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technology Program (SETP)
  • James Prendergast, Executive Director IEEE
  • Kris Bertness, National Institute of Standards and Technology
  • Gregory L. Rorrer, National Science Foundation

The exhibition hall will be open from Tuesday, June 22 to Thursday, June 24 with exhibitors from across the globe and will be co-located near 700 poster presentations. In addition, a dedicated presentation stage will provide exhibitors a venue for new product demonstrations.

Tuesday, June 22 is Public Day at the PV Specialists Conference, and the local community will be granted free admission to the exhibition hall from 1:30 - 5pm. During this time, the annual High School Solar Science Fair demonstration and competition will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Local students from Honoka'a High School, Farrington High and McKinley High will be displaying practical applications of PV to power their projects.
