World Cup: Germany 4-0 Australia, Germany Put On A Winning Show

Expectant eyes watched Germany kick off their World Cup campaign against Australia tonight, but many viewers weren't expecting what they saw.

Germany lost star player Ballack before the tournament, their Goalkeeper is relatively inexperienced and their two forwards are lacking goals and form, so when Australia began to press the German's buttons early on it looked like they could be in for a hard night.

The Aussies came close a couple of times very early on as the German defense scrambled around to clear the ball. They settled quickly though and on eight minutes Podolski, one of the out-of-form forwards, smashed a rocket of a shot past the 'keeper for the opener.

Germany then began to enjoy themselves as they destroyed a struggling Aussie defense. Klose came very close to adding a second when he drilled a point-blank shot wide, before he grabbed the second with a header, beating a rushing 'keeper to the ball and heading into an empty net.

Australia's torment was cemented on the hour mark when their star play Tim Cahill was shown a straight red card (the third of the day) a blow for this match and for the next which he will miss through a suspension. Muller then added a third for Germany when his drilled shot rebounded in off the post before Cacau slipped in a fourth to end a fantastic day for Germany who have easily played the best football so far in this competition.

An exciting game to end a somewhat subdued day of football (with the other two matches offering little excitement).
