England Put World Cup Fans on The Rack Again!
By Ian Brockwell
Once again the fans have been treated to yet another example of how not to win a major competition. How many times have the British foolishly believed that "this time" it will be different, only to discover that we are in for more of the same?
The England football team had performed reasonably well in the run up to the World Cup competition, but as soon as the games start, the players seem to develop "stage fright" and go to pieces.
Whilst the mistake by England goalkeeper, Robert Green, was something you wouldn't expect to see at this level, it would be wrong to put all the blame on his head alone.
Even Wayne Rooney, without doubt one of the best players in the world, had a very ordinary match by his standards. In truth, with the odd exception, none of the other players were firing on all cylinders.
Although England was expected to win, the USA team had many players with experience in top flight clubs, and it was never going to be that easy. However, on recent form, the USA might consider the draw a respectable result.
Watching England play is rarely an enjoyable experience (in big competitions), knowing that the unexpected not only can happen, but frequently does. It is sometimes a relief to see England go out of a competition in the early stages, rather than experience the frustration of seeing them go close, only to fall at the final hurdle (again).
As with previous World Cup's, England will probably make it through the group stage and maybe win another game after that, but then their nerves (or bad luck) will takeover.
England now have the pressure of needing to win their remaining group matches to be certain of remaining in the competition, or hoping that their rivals get it wrong as well.
