Micrel's Latest Thin-Profile Boost Regulator Targets HDTV Tuner Applications

Micrel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today introduced the MIC2619, an integrated switch boost regulator operating at 1.2MHz that can supply up to 350mA switch current. The MIC2619 features programmable Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), very low shutdown current and soft start functionality. This device expands Micrel's MIC2601/2 and MIC2605/6 family of boost regulators and targets applications such as Digital TV-tuners, optical networking equipment, LCD bias supplies, SEPIC converters and positive output regulators. The device is currently available in volume quantities, with pricing starting at $0.40 for 1K quantities. Samples can now be ordered online on Micrel's web site at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

"Micrel's latest integrated switch boost regulator with programmable OVP is ideally suited to power the tuner chips in today's HDTVs," stated Doyle Slack, director of analog marketing, Micrel. "A high PWM switching frequency and a thin-profile package reduces the design cost for LCD, LED and 3D High Definition TVs."

With a maximum output voltage of 35V and a switch current of more than 350mA, the MIC2619 easily powers most high voltage bias applications such as TV tuners. The MIC2619 implements a constant frequency 1.2MHz PWM current-mode control scheme. The high frequency PWM operation saves board space by reducing external component sizes. An additional benefit of the constant frequency PWM control scheme as opposed to variable frequency control schemes is the lower output noise and smaller input ripple injected back to the source. The MIC2619 has programmable overvoltage protection to ensure output protection in case of fault condition.

The MIC2619 is available in a low profile Thin SOT-23 6-pin package and has an operating junction temperature range of -40degC to +125degC.
