The Community of Makers Experience Person-to-Person Car Sharing First Hand

Gettaround, Inc., a local company enabling person-to-person car sharing by hacking the personal automobile, will be exhibiting alongside Singularity University at the Maker Faire this weekend.

"The personal automobile is ripe for change and there's definitely a movement towards hacking the automobile," says Elliot Kroo, a Co-Founder at Gettaround, Inc. "Gettaround is a great example of how the DIY attitude can really help people save money."

Using advanced smartphone technology Gettaround provides an end-to-end solution that enables individuals to offset the cost of ownership by sharing their car. People without cars are provided easy, affordable access to vehicles everywhere. This all occurs without requiring the owner to be physically present in order for the transaction to occur. Harnessing the hacker culture, Gettaround is demonstrating how opening the car as a platform can bring impactful benefits to consumers and communities.

"Since the invention of the automobile, we've been conditioned to think that only one person should own and use each car," says Kroo. "Gettaround is trying to change that paradigm by enabling people to access a vehicle when needed instead of having to possess one."

Gettaround's award-winning car-controlling mobile application and business idea were born out of Singularity University's Graduate Studies Program last summer. This mashup between robotics and energy will spark the interest of scientists, engineers and makers alike.

Visit Gettaround in the Singularity University Café at the Maker Faire in San Mateo on Saturday, May 22nd and Sunday, May 23rd. We might even send you home ready to hack your car!
