Hair Cuts Against Oil Spills
Proving a hair cut can do more than make you look good, Hoshall's Salon & Spa in Folsom, Calif. is now participating in a nationwide campaign to collect and recycle hair cuttings that are used as boom filler to soak up oil. With over 300,000 pounds of hair cut each day at hair salons in the U.S., not to mention all the clippings from pet groomers, beauty now meets the beast by providing an immense amount of sponge capability.
How the hair cuttings idea came to be:
Managed by Matter of Trust, a national non-profit organization, the idea of using hair cuttings to soak up oil came about when a hair stylist from Alabama was watching CNN coverage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. He made the correlation between the oil soaked hair of the Alaskan otters with people washing their hair to rid it of oil, realizing that hair could be a powerful sponge or mat to absorb oil.
How the process works:
Hair salons gather clean hair cuttings, free of other debris, and put them in a bag and ship them to a warehouse in California, where they are checked and then distributed to processing plants that make the booms which are used to help control oil spill damage. Last year alone, hair cut clippings helps soak up oil and mitigate damage for more than 2,600 oil spills.
