Vice Secretary of the Democratic Party of Vietnam Meets with U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Michael Michalak; Expresses Concern about Conviction and Imprisonment of Activists in Vietnam
SAN JOSE, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Dr. Ngai Nguyen, the Vice Secretary of the Democratic Party of Vietnam
(DPV), met yesterday at the State Department in Washington, D.C. for
ninety minutes with U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael Michalak, to
discuss the conviction and imprisonment of activists in Vietnam.
Dr. Ngai urged Ambassador Michalak, the Department of State and the U.S.
Congress to "Increase your dialogue with the Vietnam government and
express serious concerns about Vietnam's ongoing religious and human
rights violations and insist they take meaningful steps to advance
religious freedom and related human rights in Vietnam." According to Dr.
Ngai, "These individuals have been imprisoned merely for expressing the
peaceful expression of their beliefs."
Ambassador Michalak said the appeals court in Vietnam will be meeting on
May 11, 2010 to review the cases of the DPV's General Secretary lawyer
Le Cong Dinh, and others, and it is hoped they may be released or have
their sentences reduced.
In addition, Ambassador Michalak remarked that the American Bar
Association has been working with the Vietnam bar leaders to improve
their judicial independence, and the U.S. has been gathering information
regarding Internet violations in Vietnam. The U.S. government is also
watching closely the very sensitive territorial dispute between China
and Vietnam.
Since he became Ambassador, Mr. Michalak said the number of Vietnamese
students studying in the United States has tripled, which improves the
dialogue between our two countries.
Dr. Ngai Nguyen, on behalf of The Democratic Party of Vietnam, thanked
Ambassador Michalak for his continued interest in improving human rights
and his efforts to release all political prisoners in Vietnam. In
addition, Dr. Ngai urged the State Department, if sufficient progress is
not made, to re-designate Vietnam a 'Country of Particular Concern' for
its gross violations of human rights and religious freedom.
