Fresh off its successful Fitness Expo launch with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Shape Up America Campaign has just announced Central Park in New York City as the next stop on its 30-City U.S. Tour to promote better physical fitness among America's children and dent the current epidemic of childhood obesity in the U.S.
Michael Torchia, founder of Operation Fitness, will be hosting his Shape Up America Campaign with a free Health and Fitness Expo at Central Park in New York City on Saturday, June 19th, 2010, in conjunction with the Adventures NYC event which attracts over 25,000 health and sports enthusiasts each year.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has submitted a resolution to make the week of June 21st, 2010 "Health and Fitness Week" in the City of New York. Mayor Bloomberg will receive the Health Advocate Achievement Award from Shape Up America found Michael Torchia for his advocacy of health and fitness issues and for being such a powerful and positive role model to the citizens of New York City. In addition, New York City Council Member Gale A. Brewer will be participating in the cutting of the ribbon at the Shape Up America Campaign event.
Special guest appearances at the Shape Up America free fitness expo include celebrity appearances from Cesar Milan of T.V.'s "Dog Whisperer", Bill Germanakos, the season four winner of the "The Biggest Loser", and actor and athlete Sebastian Siegel, along with Michael O'Hearn, cast member of the new American Gladiator show.
These celebrities will be joined at this event by renowned doctors, fitness experts, holistic practitioners, pro athletes, and bodybuilding champions to spread the message of better fitness and offer attendees free health screenings, fitness demonstrations for children and adults, nutrition lectures, healthy cooking tips/food preparation, athletic competitions, obstacle course challenges, boxing classes and martial arts demonstrations, dance classes, chair massages, pet health seminars, pet fitness demonstrations and dog obedience training.
The Shape Up America Campaign Free Health and Fitness Expos are held outside, in parks that are centrally located in highly populated communities and are easily accessible for adults, children and their pets. This campaign is only the first step in creating a ground-swell of awareness of the dangerously high incidence of obesity taking over our nation.
