The Face of Jesus? - Turin Shroud receives 3D treatment
By Ian Brockwell
A team of computer artists have spent the last 6 months creating a 3D image from the Turin Shroud, producing what might be the "real" face of Jesus Christ.
The Turin Shroud is said to be the cloth that covered Jesus in his tomb, but others have suggested that the Shroud came into existence some 1,000 years after the Crucifixion and is nothing more than a "medieval forgery"
Unfortunately, whether the Shroud is genuine or not, it is the only known artifact available that might provide the image of Jesus.
In 1978 a team of American scientists examined the Shroud and found no reliable evidence of forgery, saying that the formation of the image was "a mystery"
Ten years later a radiocarbon dating test was performed and concluded that the Shroud dated from the middle Ages, between 1260 and 1390.
Whilst there is no reason to doubt the abilities of the computer artists involved in producing this new image, it might not be a coincidence that this news appears just before Easter?
With the greatest respect to believers, churches are run very much like any other business nowadays (the Vatican is a good example of what I mean) and news like this wouldn't do any harm to their image, and especially welcome at the moment with all the sex scandals hitting the headlines.
Maybe the Shroud did cover the body of someone who has suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion, but that doesn't mean it was Jesus.
It is quite possible that the markings on the Shroud just happen to look like a person, and the resemblance is purely coincidental. Some may remember the face of Jesus appearing on a burnt piece of toast (sold on EBay), and on one occasion etched on a frying pan!
To make this point a little clearer, I have created a little test that I think you will find interesting (and maybe amusing?). Please click on the link below to reveal an image, and then follow the instructions provided. It will only take you a couple of minutes, but well worth the effort.
