Solazyme Wins No. 1 Sustainable Biofuels Technology Award at World Biofuels Markets Conference in Amsterdam
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Solazyme, Inc., a renewable oil production company and leader in algal
biotechnology, took home the number one position in the Sustainable
Biofuels Technology category at the 2nd Annual Sustainable
Biofuels Awards. The awards, which were announced March 16 in Amsterdam
at the World Biofuels Markets conference, offered companies the ability
to showcase significant accomplishments in the biofuels industry.
Solazyme is recognized as being the top technology supplier that is
improving the efficiency and sustainability of biofuels production.
"Solazyme is honored to be nominated among some of the top biofuel
technology companies in the world for this award," said Jonathan
Wolfson, CEO, Solazyme. "We are grateful to accept this top spot as our
team has worked tirelessly to establish Solazyme's technology platform
as a viable alternative to traditional oil production methods."
The World Biofuels Market selected a panel of independent judges to
evaluate and analyze the nominations for these awards. Taken into
consideration were sustainability benefits as measured by GHG savings,
environmental impact and further societal benefits from each
nomination's operational or technological advances. Solazyme's
technology shows exponential benefits over petroleum in all of these
categories.
Since the company's start in 2003, Solayzme has produced the world's
first algal-based renewable diesel, the world's first 100% algal-based
jet fuel, and road-tested the first algae-derived biodiesel.
Additionally, Solazyme has signed the largest commercial algae fuel
contracts to date, supplying the U.S. Department of Defense with 21,500
gallons of fuel for Navy compatibility testing. In 2009, a
field-to-wheels greenhouse gas (GHG) lifecycle test conducted by the
Life Cycle Associates, LLC, determined that Solazyme's algal biofuel,
Soladiesel , emits 85 to 93 percent less GHG emissions than standard
petroleum based ultra-low sulfur diesel (USLD). The analysis also
concluded that Solazyme's advanced biofuels result in a significantly
lower carbon footprint than any currently available first-generation
biofuel.

and at large scale. These oils and biomaterials are tailored not only
for biofuel production, but also as replacements for fossil petroleum
and plant oils in a diverse range of products running from clean fuels
and chemicals to cosmetics and foods. Solazyme's oils and fuels provide
compelling solutions to increasingly complex issues of fuel scarcity,
energy security and environmental impact while fitting cleanly into the
pre-existing multi-trillion dollar fuel infrastructure. Solazyme's
