Wellpartner Helps 340B-Eligible Organizations Take Advantage of New Office of Pharmacy Affairs Guidelines
PORTLAND, Ore. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Wellpartner, a nationally recognized provider of pharmacy distribution
and administrative services, today announced the availability
of multi-pharmacy network management and support for 340B-eligible
health organizations. The recently announced Office of Pharmacy Affairs
(OPA) guidelines now allow 340B-eligible entities to use more than a
single contract pharmacy for each OPA registered site.
Previous restrictions limited these organizations to one pharmacy per
clinic or site. Wellpartner intends to help all of its 340B clients take
full advantage of this change.
"Wellpartner has long anticipated this policy change by the OPA,"
said W. Michael Wright, Wellpartner President and CEO. "We have
advocated easing the one-to-one restriction for some time now, and have
years of experience managing multi-pharmacy networks for 340B-eligible
entities under an OPA approved Alternative Methods Demonstration
Project."
Wellpartner is a pioneer in multi-pharmacy network
management for 340B clients. In 2008, the company collaborated with two
Oregon clients, Northwest Human Services and Tillamook County Health
Department, on an Alternative Methods Demonstration Project (AMDP) that
addressed the multi-pharmacy issue. The project allowed these clinics to
create pharmacy networks in order to expand access to affordable
medications for their patients. The experience gained, and processes
developed as a result of this AMDP, allows Wellpartner to quickly expand
these services to other 340B-eligible organizations nationwide.
Easing of the single-pharmacy restriction will give patients of
340B-eligible health organizations greater access to affordable
medications through the addition of more retail outlets as well as
mail-order. However, these networks will also increase the
administrative complexity because the revised OPA guidelines establish
new compliance rules, including standards for contracting, audits, and
prevention and remedy of duplicate discounts and diversion.
To assist 340B-eligible health organizations and other interested
parties to better understand the implications of these changes,
Wellpartner will host an informative teleconference/web exchange on
Monday, March 22, 2010.
