SAN DIEGO - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The first official California Welcome Center to be located on Native American lands is scheduled to open this week at the Viejas Outlet Center in Alpine.

Local elected officials, state and local tourism officials and leaders of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians will officially open the newest official California Welcome Center on Wednesday, March 17, at the Viejas Outlet Center.

The 1,000-square-foot California Welcome Center is located in the Viejas Outlet Center, which is on the Viejas Indian Reservation near Interstate 8 and Willows Road in Alpine, approximately 30 miles east of San Diego.

The new California Welcome Center joins a network of 14 official welcome centers throughout the state, including one along Interstate 5 in Oceanside. The centers offer maps, brochures, and other tourism-related information, as well as discounted tickets to local attractions and merchandise for sale.

"We are honored and excited to host the new California Welcome Center on our Reservation," said Viejas Tribal Chairman Bobby L. Barrett. "The selection of this location recognizes the strong, positive relationship our tribe has with the local community. It also demonstrates the importance of East County to the tourism-related economy in San Diego and southern California. We are proud to help show local and out-of-state tourists all that East County has to offer."

The new California Welcome Center at the Viejas Outlet Center will serve as an important gateway to the more than 8.9 million people who annually travel on Interstate 8 into San Diego County. It will be operated by the California Convention and Visitors Bureau.
