Local News Web Site Tewspaper Recycles Social Media
Second edition of Web site showcases improved algorithm
The process of filtering messages is no easy task - Tewspaper has tracked over 300,000 stories since its beginning in late August 2009. Those 300,000 stories cover national news and the five major metros Tewspaper currently tracks. After sorting the messages, Tewspaper uses algorithms to determine whether the messages are newsworthy. Some of the results are reviewed by hand, providing the algorithm with feedback it later uses to analyze future messages.
The development of Tewspaper has led to a patent application and has culminated in the launch of a second edition on March 15, 2010. While the primary focus of the new edition is the improved algorithm, Tewspaper's user interface has been completely updated. Staying true to the Web site's social media roots, the new edition allows users to provide feedback on every story.
The new user interface is expected to significantly increase the amount of time each user spends on Tewspaper. One key improvement is that Tewspaper automatically reformats text so stories are more uniform. Links are condensed, attributions are moved to the byline, and social media conventions are hidden to make the text more legible.
Tewspaper currently covers five cities - Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York City. The next focus for Tewspaper is on increasing coverage in those five cities while also doubling the number of cities Tewspaper serves.
