Worden Brothers Announces Plans for Mobile Version of FreeStockCharts.com
Worden Brothers announced today it will use
Microsoft Silverlight to create an application that will deliver real-time,
streaming, stock charts to mobile devices. In November 2008, Worden decided
to use Silverlight to create FreeStockCharts.com, a Web-based application
that delivers real-time stock data to any browser at no charge. Barely over
a year old, FreeStockCharts.com has grown to display more than a million
live stock charts per day.
"The customer engagement is incredible. Each chart is viewed on average for
more than four minutes due to the streaming data and rich set of
interactive drawing tools, all made possible by Silverlight," said Chris
Worden, president of Worden Brothers. "People forget they are on a Web
site. They think they are running true Windows software. It even works on a
Macintosh, which now makes up 9 percent of our usage."
"Silverlight was a no-brainer," said Ole Pederson, chief software architect
for Worden Brothers. "We already had a pile of Microsoft .NET code from our
existing Windows applications. When we decided to build
FreeStockCharts.com, we reused existing code and were able to 'go live' in
two weeks. We expect Windows Phone application development to be that easy
as well."
Worden Brothers plans to roll out a basic version for Windows® Phone 7
Series as quickly as possible. The first goal is to get the free, real-time
data stream going onto the mobile platform. Many of the more robust
features on FreeStockCharts.com will be included in the mobile applications
including alerts, streaming quotes and charts, portfolio monitoring, social
networking between users, publishing to Twitter and Facebook, and real-time
scanning. TD AMERITRADE customers will also have access to their own live,
updating portfolios.
Two weeks ago, FreeStockCharts.com tied YahooFinance.com for second place
in the Readers' Choice Awards given by Technical Analysis of Stocks and
Commodities magazine, beating out eleven other finance sites that have been
around for years.
"We couldn't have done it without Silverlight. No other tool lets us build
multi-threaded Web apps in a traditional development environment," Ole
Pederson added. "We push 90,000 hours of continuously updating financial
data into tens of thousands of browsers every market day. With the
scalability Silverlight offers us, we are ready to grow a hundredfold.
We've never been in that position historically. The best part is that we
write our code once in Microsoft Visual Studio, then compile it to either a
desktop application or rich internet application. Now we're going to be
able to compile a lot of this same code onto Windows Phone 7 Series."
"Microsoft is excited to see the tremendous success and growth
FreeStockCharts.com has had to date," said Steve Sklepowich, Director for
Silverlight at Microsoft Corp. "By taking advantage of the rich features
and capabilities in Silverlight, FreeStockCharts.com has been able to
provide its customers with a unique and interactive experience."
