Jobaya Tests VOD Service for iPhone and iPad

London, United Kingdom, March 15, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Apple is facing a fresh challenge from a UK start-up for control of video delivery to the iPhone and the iPad. Jobaya has developed a Video on Demand solution for both devices based entirely on Amazon's AWS cloud infrastructure. Content will be stored, transcoded and streamed from the Cloud. The service will use custom web apps for each type of device supported, starting with the iPhone and the iPad, and extending to Android and Windows Mobile devices.

Unlike iTunes, which is based on downloading content to a Mac or PC, Jobaya will stream directly to the iPad using WiFi, and to the iPhone using 3G and WiFi. The service is currently in beta test on the iPhone and is ready for testing on the iPad as soon as it is available.

Jobaya has been working on transcoding TV and movie content since October and has over 400 titles stored and streamable from the Cloud. Every title is stored in multiple formats so that delivery can be optimised for any device and different network conditions.

Jobaya is planning a service launch in the UK in the summer, with content available on a pay per view basis. The company is aiming to initially licence over 1,500 titles. Jobaya founder Philip John said, ”We still have licencing and financing issues to finalise and we need to build up the quantity of video that we have stored in the Cloud, but so far our progress has been very encouraging.”

From day one we've been aiming at a massively scalable architecture, and Amazon's cloud clearly allows us to do this, but the other key is the web app approach which allows us to offer the service without Apple policing it. With relatively few changes we've got the structure to support any device.”

Jobaya is currently developing an API for its solution that will allow for white-label and customised implementations.
