FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock Deliver Identity Theft Workshops to Law Enforcement

TEMPE, Ariz. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Increased identity theft awareness is important not only for consumers, but for law enforcement officials who are working daily to combat the crime and put thieves behind bars. In an effort to further educate law enforcement, LifeLock, Inc. (www.lifelock.com) and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) are sponsoring three upcoming identity theft summits in April. Each event will include a day-long training summit hosted in a different city, providing local and statewide law enforcement officials with the latest information on identity theft trends, new scams and investigative methods. The host cities include Charlotte, N.C., Spokane, Wash., and the Seattle, Wash. area.

As part of an ongoing nationwide series of free, interactive training sessions offered through a partnership between LifeLock and FBI-LEEDA, these summits will help to increase law enforcement's knowledge base on this crime. In 2009 alone, the series reached 12 different cities across the country-from Orlando to Detroit to Los Angeles-with more than 1,243 law enforcement officials from 403 different agencies in attendance.

"The identity theft education we received by hosting the summit here last October was invaluable," said Chief Glenn Ladd of the North Kansas City Police Department. "I believe this type of training is essential for all law enforcement officials who deal with this crime, and the open forum setting allows for everyone to be involved and share experiences they've encountered in the field. After having been a part of this, I feel our police department is better equipped to handle these types of cases and will have more success in combating the crime long-term."

According to Javelin Strategy & Research's "2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report," an estimated 11.1 million Americans were victim of identity fraud last year. This is up from an estimated 9.9 million victims in 2009. The same report states that the number of arrests made in 2009 doubled from the previous year, to 12 percent.

"As the leader in this field, and with identity theft on the rise, it would be an absolute disservice to consumers if we did not facilitate this identity theft training," said LifeLock Chairman and CEO Todd Davis. "By getting local and statewide law enforcement together in one room for a full day of thorough training, we are empowering officials to understand this crime better and work to help stop it. I strongly believe that with time, this training will have an impact on the future of identity theft."
