123Net Continues Expansion with Acquisition of Ann Arbor Internet Service Provider's Wireless Network Assets

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - 123Net, a privately held Michigan-based carrier of voice and data announced today the acquisition of several hundred Internet customers formerly served by 20/20 Communications, the Ann Arbor-based private sector partner in the Wireless Washtenaw Project

The acquisition follows 123Net President Dan Irvin's expansion strategy by increasing the company's footprint in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County. "20/20 built an innovative wireless network delivering new, cutting-edge communication technology to a growing list of satisfied customers. We're thrilled to have them unite under the 123Net brand," said Irvin.

The announcement signifies a renewed sense of optimism for the ambitious county-wide wireless plan which suffered setbacks amid the sluggish economy. 123Net is exploring the possibility of significant upgrades to the 20/20 wireless network, which currently covers much of the greater Ann Arbor area and Washtenaw County.

"The Wireless Washtenaw Project has been and is a significant undertaking," said Debbie Peterson, vice president of 20/20 Communications. "With Dan's visionary leadership and the experience of the 123Net team we look forward to bringing this project to fruition and applying the lessons learned from other Michigan counties," added Peterson.

20/20's network is geared towards under-served areas where broadband choices are limited or virtually non existent. In addition to potential network upgrades, 123Net is exploring the possibility of deploying WiMAX, a more recent wireless technology based on the 802.16 or "4G" standard. This technology is currently being deployed by 123Net in parts of Oakland County but has thus far been available only to businesses.

"We think that 20/20 has developed a niche for providing services in this area and we see an opportunity to expand on this vision and bring it to its full potential. 20/20 has built a solid base to expand from and we are excited about the opportunity to help more businesses grow and prosper," said Dominic Serra, who handles Wireless Operations at 123Net.

123Net was launched in 1997 to help small businesses take advantage of the potential of the burgeoning Internet. It has experienced consistent 30 percent growth year-over-year. And sells its products and services through 120 wholesalers and 26 agents. For more information visit www.123.net.
