Colorado's New Transparency Web Site Shows How Individual Tax Dollars are Spent at www.Colorado.gov/taxtracks
DENVER - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Colorado State Treasurer Cary Kennedy today launched a first-of-its-kind
new service on the Colorado Department of Treasury Web site that shows
Coloradans how their individual tax dollars are being spent and
encourages citizens to provide feedback about whether they agree with
the state's financial decisions.
"Government can only be accountable if taxpayers can see what they are
buying and how much they are paying for it," said Kennedy.
The interactive Web site, called Colorado
Tax Tracks, available at www.colorado.gov/taxtracks,
gives people detailed information on an individual or family basis about
how their state tax dollars are being used. Citizens can enter their
income and the system instantly provides an interactive report that
estimates how much they spent to support different state services.
Information is broken down so that taxpayers can see how their tax
dollars are allocated to nearly one hundred functions of government from
clean drinking water inspections to disease control.
Visitors to the Web site then have the opportunity to vote on whether
they agree with how funds are collected and spent.
"Taxpayers need to know if they are getting value for their tax dollar,"
said Kennedy. "When people pay taxes, they are buying a service and
benefit for their community. Colorado Tax Tracks shows taxpayers what
they pay and what they buy for their money."
