Past America's Cup Challenger Captures New Prize in Newport, Rhode Island

NEWPORT, R.I., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- British entrepreneur and yachtsman Peter de Savary has recently returned to Newport, Rhode Island to chart a new course, this time on land, rather than at sea. de Savary led the British sailing team in its challenge for the America's Cup in 1983 but his contender, Victory 83, was beaten by Australia II in the final heat.

de Savary recently purchased Vanderbilt Hall, a 33-suite historic mansion hotel and private members club located in the heart of Newport's Historic Hill. The mansion was originally built by Alfred G. Vanderbilt in 1909, for his mistress, but was later redesigned for a men's club and then later the YMCA and centerpiece of Thornton Wilder's novel Theopolus North.

de Savary is recognized around the world for his boutique hotels and his unique private clubs which include the fabled Skibo Castle in Scotland, where Madonna wed Guy Ritchie. Amongst his many creations are the St James' Clubs (London, Paris, Antigua, New York & Los Angeles), Bovey Castle, Glenborrodale Castle, Carnegie Abbey, Cherokee Plantation, The Abaco Club, Mount Cinnamon & Port Louis and The Cary Arms.

Having a flair for the unusual, de Savary was drawn back to Newport by the rich history of the Vanderbilt Hall mansion and his love for Newport. The mansion hotel and private club offers its members and guests 33 well-appointed suites, the stunning Monty's Bar & Dining Room, conservatory and garden, a European spa with indoor and outdoor pools, roof top terrace and a host of amenities including M/Y Vanderbilt, a 60' classic motor yacht.

One of the most amazing features of the mansion hotel and member's club is Peter de Savary's private collection of American Illustration art where artworks from the "Golden Age" complete the visual history of the Gilded era. The exceptional artwork on display throughout the main rooms of Vanderbilt Hall was assembled with the advice of the National Museum of American Illustration also located in Newport, Rhode Island. The art collection is believed to be valued much greater than the entire cost of the hotel and renovations and creates a marvelous ambience not found in other hotels.

Vanderbilt Hall is a captured prize indeed! Unlike the Americas Cup, it is a prize de Savary wants to share with those of generous camaraderie and a spirit of "bon vivant".

Non-member hotel guests are welcome in 2010. Membership is limited.
