Response to "No Finish in Sight for 'virtual' Border Fence"
I have attached a copy of an article below that appears in today's edition of the Washington Times and the title of that article, basically says it all, "No finish in sight for 'virtual' border fence."
I have written many commentaries about our nation's abysmal failures to do virtually anything competently where many issues are concerned, but especially where the securing of our nation's borders and the creation of an immigration system that has real integrity. As I have noted on a variety of occasions at various venues, "A virtual fence will stop virtually no one!"
Today I have attached three news reports to this commentary. I have attached the Washington Times news report, I have attached the transcript to the excellent 60 Minutes news report that aired on CBS nearly 2 months ago in which CBS Correspondent Steve Kroft hammered the massive screwup known variously as the "Virtual Fence," "SBI (Secure Border Initiative" and, most recently, "SBInet."
Finally, I have also provided you, below, with a copy of an article that appeared online at NextGov on February 1st, entitled, "Delays prompt White House to propose deep cut in secure border initiative."
I would recommend that the government simply refer to this fiasco along with all of the other military sounding projects to protect our nation from the massive influx of illegal aliens, among whom are criminals and, undoubtedly, terrorist sympathizers and, indeed, terrorists, with a single and quite accurate name: "Operation Back-Rub!"
I have made this recommendation on a few previous occasions, when the previous administration touted a number of previous operations. One such example was the program known as "Operation Community Shield." This field operation was intended to target aliens involved in violent gang-related crimes. Certainly this is a very worthwhile idea, but when the former president, George W. Bush, boasted about how that operation netted the arrest and removal of some 2,300 alien gang members, I was stunned!
It has been estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of gang members in our country and a significant percentage of them are believed to be aliens. In fact, I have read disturbing reports that indicated that there are more violent gang member operating in our country than there are sworn police officers in the entire United States of America. So providing the citizens of our country with such a military sounding program as "Operation Community Shield" makes it clear that our government is failing at its most basic responsibilities of securing our nation's borders and protecting our citizens from criminals whose mere presence in our country represents a violation of law.
Our government, for far too long, has been able to get away with creating illusions that do not match reality. When a child awakens from his (her) sleep in the middle of the night, the dutiful parent will generally speak to the child in a soothing voice, administer a gentle back-rub and tell the child whatever is necessary to calm the child so that he will go back to sleep and the parent, too, can go back to sleep.
As I have noted in ever so many commentaries, our government has whittled away at our expectations of privacy and freedom in the name of national security and yet, refuses to truly secure our borders and create an immigration system that has real integrity. In the quest for the creation of the illusion of living up to its obligations, our nation's "leaders" have squandered billions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars while our borders are as porous as a sieve and the immigration bureaucracy that alleges to represent the "legal" process for aliens to seek to secure resident alien status and even United States citizenship rewards massive levels of fraud and makes an absolute mockery of those true immigrants whose lifelong dream is to legally immigrate to the United States, play by the rules and follow our nation's laws to become a part of this nation.
Let me make it clear, the fence on the border, in and of itself will not protect our nation, but it should be an integral component of an immigration system that secures the sovereignty of our nation's borders and aids in protecting our nation and our citizens from the unlawful entry of illegal aliens including criminals and terrorists as well as a wide variety of contraband including narcotics, counterfeit goods that may well compromise public health and safety and even weapons of mass destruction.
Perhaps a part of the reason that our government has been so inept is that there is no competition where the securing of our nation's borders are concerned. Our citizens are at the mercy of a government that has no sense of obligation to its own citizens. Our government has established a track record that would cause a comparable business to file for bankruptcy and, indeed, our government's financial situation does not give me any comfort either.
Time and again our nation's leaders have repeated the mantra, "The terrorists only have to get it right once while we have to be right 100% of the time."
Every unsecured mile of border provides criminals, terrorists and other illegal aliens' ample opportunity to enter our country without detection. Think about how much destruction just 19 terrorists inflicted on our nation on September 11, 2001. Also consider that only a single hole in the bottom of a boat could cause that boat to wind up at the bottom of the pond. If our border was the keel of a ship, that ship would have long ago found itself at the bottom of the ocean!
As those of you who are familiar with my writings know, I often like to talk a bit about the sage advice my parents provided me with when I was a young boy growing up in Brooklyn. My dad, a pragmatic construction worker provided me with his rules of engagement. He told me I should never throw the first punch but that I make certain to always throw the last punch. He also told me that if anyone ever threw a punch at me, I should never again walk past him with my hands in my pocket.
My dad's rules of engagement should certainly be followed by our government today! Our nation has been attached numerous times, by terrorists. Many of those attacks occurred overseas, but in 1993 our nation suffered casualties from two terrorist attacks carried out on our soil. In January, 1993 an individual by the name of Amir Kansi, a Pakistani national who secured political asylum by committing fraud stood outside the CIA in Langley, Virginia and opened fire upon the cars streaming into that complex of buildings on a cold winter morning. When the shooting subsided, two CIA officers lay dead and three were wounded. Kansi fled from the scene and left the United States. He was ultimately captured and returned to the United States to stand trial. Following his being found guilty, he was executed. The death and suffering he caused, however, could not be undone.
Just one month later, in February, 1993, a truck bomb was detonated in the basement of the World Trade Center complex resulting in massive damage to that iconic landmark, estimated at one half billion dollars. More importantly, 6 people were killed and hundreds were injured. The explosion nearly toppled one of the 110 ten story tall structures. Had that happened, God knows how many tens of thousands of people might have been slaughtered. The individuals involved in that attack had been found to have committed immigration fraud and gamed the immigration bureaucracy. Yet the Clinton Administration did absolutely nothing to address these, literally, fatal flaws in the system- leading to the attacks of September 11, 2001.
Now the news reports indicate that another 6 years may be necessary to secure our nation's border with Mexico! Stop and give this some thought- The fence might require until 2016 to be completed! Let us place this in proper perspective: when President John F. Kennedy established the goal of sending American astronauts to the moon and returning them safely to the earth, this audacious proposal was to be carried out in less than a single decade! Arguably, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin alighted on the lunar surface, fulfilling that goal, this was the last time that the American spirit, summed up by the two word phrase, "Can do!" was appropriate.
Today, our nation is the nation of "Can't do" with an explanation and an excuse explaining yet another failure! This is not acceptable!
When our nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 it took just about 44 months for the United States, acting in concert with its allies to build fleets of ships and aircraft that had never existed before. All sorts of new technology had to be created and even nuclear weapons fashioned and deployed with scarcely proven technology. That was the "Can do" spirit at its best!
Our nation was attacked twice in 1993 by terrorists who should never have been permitted into our country and certainly should never have been granted the immigration benefits they applied for that facilitated their attacks on our nation.
Those attacks occurred 17 years ago. The attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred eight and a half years ago. And a fence may be completed in another 6 years?!
If you are not upset about this, consider that nothing is still being said about the imperative to combat massive levels of immigration fraud. Indeed, the administration and members of Congress are already licking their chops at the prospect of creating an amnesty for millions of illegal aliens whose true identities are unknown and unknowable. There is no way of knowing their true nationalities. There is no way of knowing if they are wanted fugitives fleeing law enforcement in their own countries. There is now way of knowing who they are affiliated with or what their true intentions are in running our nation's borders. There is also no reliable way of even knowing how long they have been in the United States.
By using multiple false identities, these illegal aliens have so effectively covered their tracks that an alien who arrived here last week would have absolutely no problem in convincing the beleaguered adjudications officers at USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) that they have been in the United States for as many years as they would need in order to qualify for participation in Comprehensive Immigration Reform. This is the reason that when I wrote a commentary about Comprehensive Immigration Reform two and a half years ago when the United States Senate last attempted to jam this legislative nightmare down our throats, I strongly suggested that a much more accurate and descriptive name for that legislation would have been the "Terrorist Assistance and Facilitation Act!"
Criminals and terrorists should give our government the MVP Award!
It is often said that when people do too little too late to remedy a dangerous situation that they "Locked the barn doors after the horses were stolen." Where our borders and the immigration system are concerned, the horses were stolen, the barn was burned down and our leaders are still refusing to lock the doors to the farmhouse!
This is a level of ineptitude that would get any other employee fired! This is the sort of ineptitude that if committed by a physician would result in a massive malpractice lawsuit! This is a level of ineptitude that if committed by a corporation would result in a massive class action lawsuit!
Enough is enough!
My goal in writing this and other commentaries is to point out our nations many failings before more victims pay the ultimate price for the incompetence and ineptitude of our government.
The first step in problem-solving is to first identify the problems and vulnerabilities and then devise strategies to overcome them.
Any politician who refuses to work to secure our borders and create an immigration system that has integrity is either corrupt or too dumb to keep his (her) job. Any politician, irrespective of party affiliation who favors Comprehensive Immigration Reform and the outrageous betrayal that this would represent given the national security implications that this program would have, should be shown the door at the next election!
If you find yourself to be in agreement with this commentary, I ask that you forward it to as many of your friends and family members as possible and encourage them to do the same.
Later this year, each and every member of the House of Representatives is up for reelection. Later this year more than one third of the members of the United States Senate will have to face their constituents. They need to be reminded that they work for us, We the People!
However, the practice of good citizenship does not end in the voting booth, it only begins there.
The large scale apathy demonstrated by citizens of this nation has emboldened elected representatives to all but ignore the needs of the average American citizen in a quest for massive campaign funds and the promises of votes to be ostensibly delivered by special interest groups. There is much that we cannot do but there is one thing that We the People absolutely must do- we must stop sitting on the sidelines!
The collective failure of We the People to get involved in make our concerns known to our politicians have nearly made the concerns of the great majority of the citizens of this nation all but irrelevant to the politicians. I implore you to get involved!
If this situation concerns you or especially if it angers you, I ask you to call your Senators and Congressional "Representative. This is not only your right- it is your obligation!
You need to politely but pointedly, demand to know what they are doing to protect our nation. You need to ask them how they are protecting you and your families.
All I ask is that you make it clear to our politicians that we are not as dumb as they hope we are!
We live in a perilous world and in a perilous era. The survival of our nation and the lives of our citizens hang in the balance.
This is neither a Conservative issue, nor is it a Liberal issue- simply stated; this is most certainly an AMERICAN issue!
You are either part of the solution or you are a part of the problem!
