Prospice Group Develops Innovative Workers' Compensation Model

  Share With Friends

COSTA MESA, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Responding to increasing workers' compensation insurance cost trends and eroding employee healthcare benefits in the market, the Prospice Group Corporation announced it has finalized development of a revolutionary workers' compensation program for unionized employers in California.

Although permitted by California law, very few of the labor unions representing 2.7 million workers in the State have entered into Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) agreements with employers regarding workers compensation. Given the unique dynamics of the union-employer relationship and lack of knowledgeable service support firms to facilitate and administer workers' compensation carve-out programs, the number of union workers in California enrolled in a carve-out program is approximately 31,000 workers.

"We offer a win-win, turn-key solution in a very complex and disjointed operating environment that reduces workers' compensation inefficiencies and improves the benefit delivery system for injured workers," says Samuel T. Vidaurreta, CEO of Prospice Group Corporation. "Through our proprietary model, we ensure that as workers' compensation savings are realized, employers distribute the union-negotiated share of savings due to their workers in the form of enhanced healthcare benefits that can be used to supplement existing employee benefit programs."

"Labor is interested in any innovation that helps injured workers with all their needed medical care upfront," says Dan Rush, Director of Special Operations for United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 in San Jose, CA. Rush, a renowned ADR expert, adds, "There will be watchful eyes on the Prospice Model for its economic benefit potential to employers with union contracts."

The Prospice Group has been developing its workers' compensation carve-out model and state-wide medical provider network since California reforms in 2004 allowed non-construction employers to participate with unions in ADR arrangements. Vidaurreta believes his company's innovative model will make a meaningful change. "We have an impressive array of medical and service support providers throughout California to deliver a coordinated, comprehensive range of services in an effective, lowest cost basis that bridges several regulated industries and markets."
