Policeman Killed at Point Blank in Militant Attack in Kashmir
By Fayaz Wani
Srinagar, Feb 9: A policeman was killed in a militant attack in the Indian administered Kashmir on Tuesday.
A senior police officer said that a militant fired from point blank range towards a policeman, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi at Sopore town, some 54 kms north of Srinagar on Tuesday morning. "The policeman sustained critical bullet injuries and died on the spot. The militant managed to escape from the area after shooting the policeman," he said.
The officer said that immediately after the incident, police and paramilitary personnel laid siege around the area to flush out the militants responsible for the attack. No arrests were reported, however.
After the militant attack, the security apparatus across North Kashmir has been beefed up. The Sopore area has witnessed surge in militant violence and scores of militant attacks have taken place in the township since December 2009.
