Ukraine Chooses Viktor Yanukovych and Closer Ties With Russia
By Ian Brockwell
Despite spending millions of dollars backing the "Orange Revolution" five years ago, it would seem that the United States is going to lose their ex-Soviet ally.
With only a handful of results outstanding, there is no way Yulia Tymoshenko can possibly beat her rival Viktor Yanukovych. However, Tymoshenko has yet to concede, and there is some speculation on whether she will contest the result.
Unlike previous elections, this one appears to have been carried out fairly. Joao Soares, the team coordinator from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe said "Yesterday's vote was an impressive display of democratic elections. For everyone in Ukraine, this election was a victory."
Although Yanukovych won by quite a small percentage, his victory was not entirely unexpected. The majority of voters in Ukraine had become disillusioned with the lack of progress made since the "Revolution", with only a privileged few benefiting financially (mainly those in the government).
Yulia Tymoshenko had shown a willingness to work more closely with Russia, but clearly not enough voters trusted her motives. Viktor Yanukovych on the other hand is without doubt very pro-Kremlin.
Yanukovych's victory has a number of future benefits, the most important (to Europe) will be a more stable flow of oil through Ukraine. Having Ukraine back in the Russian fold (so to speak) will also ease tensions between the United States and Russia, as Russia will feel that the western advances towards its borders has been halted, at least for the moment.
Those pushing for a NWO (New World Order) will almost certainly not share these views and will see this as a serious setback.
It is also expected that Georgia will follow Ukraine's example eventually, when the people of Georgia fail to see any benefit in dealing with the US. It is only a matter of time before Georgia chooses a new President and the new one is also likely to be more pro-Kremlin.
Although some may question the advantages of Ukraine and Georgia forming stronger ties with Russia, it should be remembered that historically they have much closer links with each other than any other country (trade and language).

Since Vladimir Putin came on the scene, Russia has grown in strength and can no longer be pushed around. Russia has formed a strong partnership with China and almost certainly supports Iran as a way to stop (or slow down) what it sees as an attempt by Israel and the US to control the Middle East.
It is believed that Russia has supplied Iran with a sophisticated missile defence system (among other things) and this may well be the reason why the expected attack on Iran has not yet taken place.
Russia's increased power should not be seen as a threat to the West, but more an attempt to keep a global balance in place, and of course provide some protection for itself.
For those seeking peace in the world, Yanukovych's victory in Ukraine should be a cause for celebration and a step in the right direction. Hopefully, Tymoshenko will accept this and concede without further delay.
