Valentine's Day - A time for love, poetry, flowers and chocolate!

The origins of Saint Valentine's Day (as it was traditionally known as) go back some 1500 years, but it was perhaps Geoffrey Chaucer in the fourteenth century who gave this celebration its "romantic love" association.

As you would expect at this time, the poetry contained many words that have long since vanished from our modern day vocabulary, as Chaucer's "The Love Unfeigned" will testify:

Valentines Day Heart

The Love Unfeigned
poem by Geoffrey Chaucer

O yonge fresshe folkes, he or she,
In which that love up groweth with your age,
Repeyreth hoom from worldly vanitee,
And of your herte up-casteth the visage
To thilke god that after his image
Yow made, and thinketh al nis but a fayre
This world, that passeth sone as floures fayre.

And loveth him, the which that right for love
Upon a cros, our soules for to beye,
First starf, and roos, and sit in hevene a-bove;
For he nil falsen no wight, dar I seye,
That wol his herte al hoolly on him leye.
And sin he best to love is, and most meke,
What nedeth feyned loves for to seke?

Whilst you can't help but admire the artistic qualities of great writers like Chaucer, and of course Shakespeare, the beauty of their words are lost in a world where even modern day English is abbreviated into "coded" messages found on your mobile phone.

Yet despite this move towards a more modern way of communicating, I suspect that there are many ladies out there that long to receive some poetic verse and a little "old fashioned" romancing.

Poetry is not so difficult to write, especially if it comes from the heart. You don't have to write in the style of Shakespeare, or use complicated words, just be sincere and find a few words that rhyme.

It would of course be better to compose your own poem, but you can use the one I have written (below) if you wish. I have even made an audio recording of this, which you can download for free HERE.

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SAY
poem by Ian Brockwell

My love for you grows stronger with each day,
But sometimes the words are hard to find,
There are so many things I wish to say,
So many feelings on my mind.

When we are apart, I feel such pain,
As my heart struggles to cope without you,
Oh what joy, when I see you again,
And see that you feel the same as I do.

I'll send you some flowers and a cute teddy bear,
There's nothing I wouldn't do if you knew,
But does that all matter, and would you really care?
All I really want to say is that "I Love You!"

Whatever your plans for Valentine's Day, I hope it is a day of happiness. And don't forget, you can express your feelings any day of the year, not just once every 12 months!
