Professor to Offer Genetic Screenings at College Campuses in Boston

Newswise - Dr. Harry Ostrer, professor of pediatrics, pathology and medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center will be conducting genetic screening at four college campuses in Boston on February 1st and 2nd. Individuals interested in being screened should sign- up online at www.med.nyu.edu/genetics.

WHAT: Dr. Ostrer will conduct genetic screening for the following genetic diseases: Bloom syndrome, Canavan's disease, Tay - Sachs disease, cystic fibrosis, glycogen storage disease 1a, familial dysautonomia, familial hyperinsulinism, Fanconi's anemia, Gaucher's disease, fragile X syndrome, maple syrup urine disease, Niemann-Pick disease , mucolipidosis IV, Usher's syndrome and nemaline myopathy.

Background on Dr. Ostrer: As a young medical school student in NYC, Boston-born Harry Ostrer set up his first genetics screening program in 1975. As a result, he decided he to become a medical geneticist in order to do research about the causes of genetic disease and work toward identifying cures and preventions. Thirty-five years later, Dr. Ostrer is bringing genetic screening to academic campuses.
