AMERICAN SYSTEMS, a government IT solutions
provider and one of the top 100 employee-owned companies in the U.S., today
announced the promotion of Peter Smith to Chief Operating Officer (COO),
effective January 1, 2010. In this role, Smith will continue his
operational responsibilities as executive vice president as well as assume
new duties overseeing the execution of the company's organic growth
strategy and business development.
"We have been fortunate to have Peter as a part of the AMERICAN SYSTEMS
family for almost 30 years," said William C. Hoover, president and CEO of
AMERICAN SYSTEMS. "Peter has built a solid reputation in the technical
community, and his leadership has helped make AMERICAN SYSTEMS a trusted
solutions partner for customers with challenges ranging from ship design to
advanced metering infrastructure. As COO, Peter will build on our 2009
success and help position the company to effectively execute our strategic
plan in the years ahead."
Smith began his career in 1980 at AMERICAN SYSTEMS' Newport, RI, office as
a test engineer for submarine and surface ship systems, and continuously
moved up the ranks to project manager and then director of the company's
Monitoring and Information Transfer Systems Directorate. In 1995, he was
promoted to director of engineering and focused on advancing the concepts
of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) technology and Open System Standards in
Navy ship design applications. In fact, Smith's expertise resulted in his
recognition as a leader in the application of open systems technology.
In his most recent role as executive vice president of operations, Smith
oversaw AMERICAN SYSTEMS' design & installation, human capital and managed
services, custom solutions, professional services and government consulting
offerings. He is an employee-owner representative on the Employee Stock
