Humana and CVS Caremark's MinuteClinic Expand Member Access to Convenient Quality Care
LOUISVILLE, Ky. & WOONSOCKET, R.I. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and MinuteClinic, the retail health care
division of CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS) announced today that the two
companies have agreed to collaborate on activities designed to expand
Humana-member access to convenient health care services.
These activities will be totally integrated and connected with Humana's
existing health care programs and services and will focus on the
convenient management of routine illnesses, identifying and managing
gaps in care and making a variety of screenings available to help
identify risk factors for chronic illnesses.
In addition, in 2010, Humana will open a health clinic for the company's
employees and their dependents at a Humana facility in downtown
Louisville, Ky. The company-owned health clinic will be managed and
operated by MinuteClinic and LifeSynch, Humana's wholly owned health and
well-being subsidiary. A MinuteClinic nurse practitioner will staff the
health clinic, which will offer health screenings, on-site health
coaching and integrated health and well-being services for clinic
visitors through LifeSynch. The integration of data and services
available at this clinic will help impact important lifestyle changes
for Humana employees and their dependents.
"We're excited to be partnering with MinuteClinic. They will clearly
help some of our health plan members receive health care services they
need, in an affordable and accessible manner," said Bruce Perkins,
Humana senior vice president, health care delivery systems and clinical
processes.
The new Humana-MinuteClinic programs will be totally connected to and
integrated with Humana's existing programs and will provide Humana
members and employees expanded access to prevention and wellness
services at the approximately 500 MinuteClinic health care centers
across the United States. MinuteClinic has been an in-network health
care provider for Humana members since 2006.
Humana will also encourage its members to visit MinuteClinic health care
centers for health-screening services to maintain their overall health
and to help detect or manage underlying chronic conditions such as high
blood pressure or diabetes. The services also include screenings such as
blood pressure testing, cholesterol screenings, and biometric screenings
that include weight and body-mass index monitoring. Also, Humana members
visiting MinuteClinic locations will be encouraged to take advantage of
health coaching services available through Humana's LifeSynch subsidiary.
"We are pleased to work with Humana to enable their members to benefit
from our expanded services such as health screenings and disease
education now available at all MinuteClinic locations," said Andrew J.
Sussman, M.D., MinuteClinic president. "By offering treatment in a
convenient setting, we can work with Humana to help reduce health care
expenses for its members, improve wellness and health outcomes and
reduce time spent away from members' families and the workplace."
Under the agreement, Humana and MinuteClinic will work together to align
their clinical care operations between MinuteClinic and LifeSynch,
including informing patients of each parties' services. In addition, as
part of the collaboration, Humana and MinuteClinic will coordinate
interfaces between their electronic medical records systems to
streamline communication around all aspects of a patient's care. Humana
and MinuteClinic will also explore the development of new services in
the market designed to further enhance member health and wellness.
MinuteClinic health care centers are staffed by nurse practitioners who
specialize in family health care and are trained to diagnose, treat and
write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and
ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections. Minor wounds,
abrasions and joint sprains are treated, and common vaccinations such as
influenza, tetanus, pneumovax, and Hepatitis A & B are available at all
locations. In addition, MinuteClinic administers a series of wellness
services designed to help consumers identify lifestyle changes needed to
improve their current and future health, including screenings for
diabetes, hypertension and obesity. No appointments are required at
MinuteClinic.
