S.T.A.R. Presents ..."I Am Truth"
On Tuesday, December 1, 2009 (12:30 - 2:00 p.m.), S.T.A.R. Foundation will host their popular "I Am My Own Prevention" impact assembly at Palisades High School, Pacific Palisades, California.
National award-winning novelist, Darnella Ford, will bring to life a program and theme entitled "I Am Truth" by S.T.A.R. Foundation. Ford is an unforgettable speaker and performance poet who has enhanced audiences around the country. She utilizes powerful prose to bring to life her own living vision.
Ford's novels are universal, transcending culture and gender, to reflect the saga of the human drama. With powerful raw themes ranging from child abuse to single motherhood, redemption and beyond, Ford captures the essence of the divine spirit in all of us.
This event is in support of and to raise awareness to World AIDS Day. This day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.
In 2007, the estimated number of persons living with HIV worldwide was 33.2 million, and there were 2.7 million people newly infected.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Women of color are especially affected by HIV infection and AIDS.
Young people in the United States are at persistent risk for HIV infection (young people, as persons who are 13-24 years of age). This risk is especially notable for youth of minority races and ethnicities. Continual HIV prevention outreach and education efforts are required as new generations replace the generations that benefited from earlier prevention strategies.
I Am Truth
As Darnella Ford presents, S.T.A.R. Foundation's "I Am Truth," we will tackle the issues surrounding lack of self-respect, self-destruction, unhealthy behaviors, and lack of self-esteem which can ultimately lead to a HIV positive lifestyle.
