Superheroes Turn Superpowers Into Food for The Hungry
Sacramento's online game developer uses virtual world currency to benefit local charities in the real world.
KlickNation Corporation, a Sacramento online game developer, has found a way to transform virtual items from a make-believe world into real life, tangible aid for hungry local families.
KlickNation will donate 50% of the proceeds of a limited edition superpower sold in its game, Superhero City, to Feeding America (www.feedingamerica.org), the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief charity. The funds will also benefit local food banks and organizations in Greater Sacramento.
The interactive role playing game, Superhero City, is one of many addictive games found on Facebook. With over 500,000 worldwide monthly active players, Superhero City offers a virtual world where players entertain themselves by creating their own superhero characters that battle to rid the world of evil - the virtual world, that is.
To benefit those in need, players can purchase the Amulet of Charitable Tidings, a limited edition item resembling a cornucopia from Classical Mythology - a horn symbolizing abundance and containing food and drink in endless supply. Only a hero with a kind heart can wear this amulet, as it is infused with the spirit of charity. Wearing the amulet boosts players' health, making them more difficult to hurt in battle, and reveals their kindness to others by placing virtual halos above their heads. This coveted Good Samaritan ability allows gamers the chance to make a difference in both reality and fantasy worlds.
"Giving to others is in my book of what a real hero does", says co-founder and CEO Mark Otero. "We all have a chance to be real-life superheroes. It's a win-win situation on every level!" Based on projected figures, KlickNation plans to donate a check for several thousand dollars to Feeding America.
KlickNation's limited edition virtual charity item, found only in the game Superhero City, will be available for the enjoyment of online gamers around the world through December 23rd 2009. "We are excited to let the virtual heroes in our game become real-life heroes by helping hungry families, and hope to inspire our players to contribute in other ways in their own communities", says Ken Walton, co-founder and COO.
