NYU Creates Shocking Sexual Bondage Outdoor Street Exhibit
On East Washington Street, one block north of 4th Street, east side of Washington Square Park, 30 feet from the children's park, in the open middle street stands 6 (10 ft x 15 ft) mural paintings of women being sexually abused and enslaved in bondage.
Words like 'used goods' and 'models to the second floor' are painted within the work, posted for all to see. On top of this block-long dumpage are letters spelling out 'Journey.' NYU students reported this exhibit was connected to a larger exhibit opening tomorrow at the NYU on campus gallery.
Where is NYU's responsibility to the neighborhood children while displaying this violence. Children see bulletin boards as good things being advertised. NYU need a strong lesson by Emily Post.
Once women and mothers in the neighborhood see this outdoor exhibit, hopefully they will force the gallery to put the paintings inside away from children's eye, who use the street to get to school and to the playground.
As an artist I agree with free expression, but NYU needs to be more community minded and exhibit the show in a confined area where children will not be confused or corrupted by the imagery, and the rest of us humans do not have to be insulted and abused visually while walking the street.
I wrote to the National Women's Liberation group and I hope they review and respond to this outrage, to all humans.
