Correctional Service of Canada: Lockdown at Saskatchewan Penitentiary

SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY, PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN - (Marketwire - Nov. 6, 2009) - The institution was placed on a general lockdown at approximately 2:30 p.m. today in order to facilitate a search of the penitentiary.

The lockdown and search are being conducted to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the institution, its staff and the inmates. It is expected that the lockdown will remain in effect throughout the weekend; this will include cancellation of all regularly scheduled visits to the medium-security offenders. The institution will return to normal routine when institutional managers determine that it is safe to do so.

Although the search will affect the medium-security units of the penitentiary, the maximum-security units are scheduled to operate under normal routine.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located one kilometre west of Prince Albert, SK, and currently accommodates 477 medium-security inmates and 158 maximum-security inmates.
