The Time Is Now to Support Entrepreneurs
Statement From Carl Schramm, CEO of the Kauffman Foundation

Today's employment update from the Bureau
of Labor Statistics presents a dismal picture for American workers,
business and any prospect of economic recovery. The majority of net new
jobs created in this country since the 1980s have come from firms between
1-5 years old, and a recent report by the Kauffman Foundation found that
two thirds of jobs created in 2007 were from these young firms.
Now is the time to help these firms grow and prosper. We cannot continue to
relay on Wall Street and fiscal stimulus to get our economy back on track.
Given the right environment young firms will grow and add desperately
needed jobs to the American economy.
Kauffman Foundation
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is a private nonpartisan foundation
that works to harness the power of entrepreneurship and innovation to grow
economies and improve human welfare. Through its research and other
initiatives, the Kauffman Foundation aims to open young people's eyes to
the possibility of entrepreneurship, promote entrepreneurship education,
raise awareness of entrepreneurship-friendly policies, and find alternative
pathways for the commercialization of new knowledge and technologies. It
also works to prepare students to be innovators, entrepreneurs and skilled
workers in the 21st century economy through initiatives designed to improve
learning in math, engineering, science and technology. Founded by late
entrepreneur and philanthropist Ewing Marion Kauffman, the Foundation is
based in Kansas City, Mo. and has approximately $2 billion in assets. For
