The SBA is an independent union consisting of approximately 10,000 active and retired sergeants of the New York City Police Department.

The annual Heroism Awards event honors leaders for "protecting liberty and freedom at home and abroad." Other honorees this year include the Most Reverend Timothy M. The SBA is an advocate for New York's police sergeants and manages a variety of projects, including health and welfare programs, political outreach efforts, and community service initiatives for the benefit of its members and their families. The SBA also acts as the collective bargaining unit for officers during contract negotiations with the City of New York.

Mr. Cherkasky has supported the law enforcement community in numerous oversight and policy development roles for the past 30 years, including 16 years of service as a prosecutor.
