Carfax Moves to Protect Consumers From Cash for Clunkers Scams
CENTREVILLE, Va., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Carfax has greatly expanded its protection of used car buyers throughout North America. Earlier this year nearly 700,000 used cars were traded-in and sent to be scrapped under the federal Car Allowance Rebate System, or "Cash for Clunkers". Working with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), Carfax has added the vehicle identification number of every car included in the program to its database.

It is illegal to resell any car traded-in under the Cash for Clunkers program.
"Carfax is committed to helping combat fraud so that our customers can buy and sell used cars with confidence," said Larry Gamache, communications director at Carfax. "Including this information in Carfax Vehicle History Reports has been a top priority for us. With great partners like NHTSA, we're making sure these cars that should be in scrap yards don't wind up in someone's driveway."
Carfax Reports now alert buyers and sellers about any vehicle that was supposed to be scrapped as part of the Cash for Clunkers program. NHTSA required dealerships to seize the engine of each vehicle and have the bodies crushed or dismantled for parts.
