Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Awarding of the Prix Medicis

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Nov. 4, 2009) - It is my pleasure to congratulate Dany Laferriere, whose talent and creativity have been recognized with the 2009 Prix Medicis. In the work that garnered him this distinction, L'enigme du retour, the Canadian author once again shows us his passion for the French language, for human emotions, and for tales from his native country, Haiti.

Our Government knows just how much artists and creators contribute to the wealth of our culture, our quality of life, the vitality of our society, and the growth of our economy. We are proud to offer them support through the programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage and a number of other federal organizations.

Each year, the Prix Medicis highlights the excellence of a novel, short story collection, or narrative in French, as well as a foreign novel and an essay. This prestigious French literary award encourages the careers of promising authors by showcasing their innovative literary style.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate this year's winner. Mr. Laferriere is renowned in Quebec and throughout Canada for his literary works, some of which have received awards and been adapted for the screen. In receiving the 2009 Prix Medicis, he is helping Canada shine on the international stage and serving as a source of pride for all Canadians.
