'Knitting IS Sexy' Calendar Showcases Beauty of Age-Old Craft

DENVER, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Who says knitting is only for grandmothers? A calendar showing the "sexy side" of knitting is now available, and its creators are hoping to transform women's lives with its release.

"I want to change the face of knitting," said Tammy Cunningham, co-creator of the calendar. "I know knitting has endless meditative aspects and it's an incredible way to feel accomplished. Oh, by the way, for those who doubt the sex appeal of knitting, just check out our calendar!"

In each month of the 2010 calendar a woman wearing an item she has knitted gives her perspective on what knitting means to her. Ten percent of calendar sales go to the Cunningham Foundation, an organization committed to teaching crafts such as knitting in developing countries to assist impoverished communities that are striving to sustain themselves.

Some of the women in the calendar also share their thoughts on knitting and the calendar project in a video released on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZiQEKNqs_Y For many of these everyday women turned models, working on the calendar transformed from a fun project into an opportunity to inspire other women to find their own beauty through creative expression.

"My hope through the calendar is to re-connect women with those creative parts that are inherent in themselves they have lost or have become disconnected with," said co-creator Laurie Maves. "Women who are knitters, they are connected to that creative part of themselves, and for me as an artist that's a fabulous thing."

Knitting is growing in popularity around the country. It remains in vogue in Hollywood with stars like Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Sarah Jessica Parker said to partake in the craft.

Tammy and Laurie were inspired to knit on a recent philanthropic trip to Ethiopia. As volunteers, they traveled there to teach Ethiopian communities how to sustain themselves with art and crafts. When a volunteer in their group taught some of the local women and children how to knit, it sparked a curiosity that turned into a passion for Cunningham and Maves.
