SoCal Connected Exclusive Investigation: Another Mix-Up By FEMA?
New Flood Zoning Angers LA Residents Who Ask Where's The Water?
Residents Forced to Buy Costly Flood Insurance They May Not Need
In an exclusive SoCal Connected investigation, "Hung Out To Dry?", SoCal Connected Correspondent Judy Muller investigates why some Los Angeles-area homeowners are suddenly being forced to pay for expensive, mandatory flood insurance-or possibly lose their homes.
Living far from any known flood source, these residents are now required to buy insurance they simply may not need. In this exclusive investigation, SoCal Connected goes to newly designated FEMA flood zones-and finds these new designations may be the result of inaccurate and outdated study data. Sound disaster planning or another Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mix-up? Also, did Los Angeles officials do proper diligence in checking out FEMA's work before it was made public? Find out Thursday, November 5 at 8:00 p.m.
SoCal's story focuses exclusively on Los Angeles, but these problems exist throughout Southern California and elsewhere in the country.
Next in "One on One: Michael Connelly," Anchor Val Zavala joins best-selling crime novelist (Nine Dragons now #1 on LA Times bestseller list) and former Los Angeles Times reporter Michael Connelly for a ride on L.A.'s historic short railway, Angels Flight, site of one of his more celebrated murders. Connelly reflects on the craft of crime writing, the evolution of the LAPD and the future of the LA Times.
And finally in this week's "Commentary", LA Weekly News Editor Jill Stewart has some advice for the next LA Police Chief.
"Hung out to Dry?" is reported by Judy Muller and produced by Karen Foshay. "One on One: Michael Connelly" is reported by Val Zvala and produced by Linda Burns. The Executive producer of SoCal Connected is Bret Marcus.
